SWIMMING.
YESTERDAY’S CARNIVAL. The Swimming Carnival held at Cob den yesterday to raise funds for the new Baths was an outstanding success, both in the financial and sporting aspects the crowd that gathered being one »f tin 1 largest ever seen at a function of this description. The swimming was of a high standard, and some rattling finishes were seen, especially in the num’s 100 yards handicap, and the Secondo rv Schools race. The heavyweight contest as usual provoked much merriment, a running fire of criticism being maintained at the performers. The following are the results: — Boys’ 50 yards Handicap.— First Heat.—Taafe I. Daly 2, Kelly 3; time 37. Second Heat.—Vincent 1, Shuttleworth 2, Garth 3. Time 37 1-5 secs. I’inal.— Taafe 1, Vincent 2. Shuttleworth 3. Time 37 sees. -Men’s 50 yards.— First Heat: Lind I, Crompton 2. Second Heat: Quinn 1, Griffen 2. Third Heat: Wells 1, Pet >v“n 2. Final: Wells 1, Keesing 2, Griffen 3. Time 31 secs. Keesing arrived too late for his heat and was included in the final after swimming;

Time 71 secs. Hutchings. Memorial Shield Relay Race for Primary Schools.—Marist A. 1, State. A. 2. During the afternoon, Mr Keesing, ex-champion diver of N.Z., gave a finished exposition of diving, demonstrating just about every class of dive known, and the bursts of applause after each dive showed fully the crowd’s appreciation of the exhibitions. Mr Keesing also showed the, various strokes used in swimming, including the breast stroke, back stroke, trudge, and crawl.
Another popular turn of the. afternoon was the aquaplaning display given by the Misses Kelly, of Blakctown. This form of sport is new to Greymouth, and the novelty evoked admiration from the crowd. The afternoon was terminated by an exhibition of life-saving by Mr Fielding, late of Auckland, who imparled many valuable hints in this direction and should be a decided acquisition to local swimming circles.
