WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Owv A>>rrespondent.)

WESTPORT, October I

It was snowing on the mountains at S a.m. on Tuesday, and to-day it was bitterly cold on the flats. Consequently the tomatoes do not show much evidence of ripening off.

Mr J. H. Greenwood, “Argus” Agent, leading stationer, etc., is leading still. This time it is in the direction of the compilation of a booklet of up-to-date views of Westport and the surrounding district, suitable as a souvenir for the Diamond Jubilee and one to be valued by the pioneers. Another enterprise on this gentleman’s part, is the introduction of envelopes, of good quality, with interesting views of Westport scenes. These, used by 1 business firms and others, would surely have an educative effect as to what sort of a place Westport is. This is the last chance of tendering good advice to readers of this column as to the Plunket Sunshine Party on Friday night. One shilling will give one a good look at all the gladsome kiddies in the height of their glory, and the grand march itself will be worth the money. After the kiddies have had a sufficiency of cream puffs, fruit salad and such like and have gone home to sleep the sleep that tired children enjoy, the adults will take the floor, again for the small sum of 1/-, and enjoy their night out, and, last scene of all, a tired but thankful Committee will look around at the amount of work still to bo accomplished in the clearing up. with the one reward that they know they have done something for the babies and their mothers. Tt may be remembered by readers (hat although we have had fairly large sums placed on the Estimates for Public Works, very insignificant amounts have been expended. To keep a watchful eye upon this sort of thing, Mr, If. E. TT-Jbjnd, M.P., communicated! i with the Hon. Mr Williams asking that!, quarterly returns as to the expcndi-l, tu.ro taking place could be made avail-!, able. The Minister has replied that' when ho returns to Wellington, ho will . ascertain if this can bo done, and communicate again with Mr Holland. ( The Secretary of the Westland Hotel and Restaurant Employees’ Union informed the members that ho had con- . siderable difficulty in seeing if the terms of the existing award aro carried out. members not giving him the necessary information, and the award not giving him power to investigate time and wages books and holidays books. Recently the Inspector of Awards was reported to have visited the Buller, but so far as he (the Union , Secretary) was aware, had made no investigation in the direction named. The Secretary also reported that as far as he knew, there was only one hoD‘l employee outside the Union, and no argument so far had been sufficient io alter her views. The meeting were convinced that the Secretary ha 1 done all that was possible for the pr-.ent. Glancing into the window of the shop adjoining the Victoria Theatre, , it appeared as if a new cycle manufactory had started, but on making inquiries, it turned out to be an advertisement regarding a serial picture ( that has started running, called “Samson of the Circus.” As this picture naturally will attract the juveniles, this competition is limited to those of * 16 and under. The competition re- ’ quires some brain work, so it cannot

be called a game of chance, and therefore is perfectly legal, so there appears a probability of one of our young fry, besides viewing a good picture, becoming the possessor of a good now hike. At the Labour Party meeting on Sunday night, it was decided to instal the electric light in the meeting room, soon as the working bee has completed the painting. It was also resolved that the proceeds of the euchre and dance to he hold on the night of. Labour Day at the Friendly Society Hall be devoted to the building fund. Mr 11. E. Holland, M.P., received a wire on Tuesday evening from the Hon. Downie Stewart, stating that the matter of a grant to the Diamond Jubilee Committee would be referred to Cabinet for further consideration, and a reply forwarded at a later date. Mr.. J. W. Fair has been the recipient of a valedictory tribute from the citizens at the Empire Hotel. To-day olur worthy citizen is en route for fresh fields and new pastures. Although it is understood that Mr Fair still retains business connections with Westport, his main activities in future aro to be devoted to flour-milling interests in Timaru, where his future home is to be. The friends of Mr and Mrs Fair are so many and so genuine that their departure will leave a void in the community, and Mr Fair’s ability in public affairs is so recognised, that his withdrawal will be a distinctj loss. Nevertheless Mr Fair must follow his own inclination, and the writer of these notes is only echoing the wishes of the community in the hope that his future may be a prosperous; and happy one and that, with his good! lady he may journey on, respected by; all with whom they come in contact.! Mr IL E. Holland, M.P., Leader of the Opposition, is giving his Post Sessional Address at the Town Hall on, Monday night next at 8 p.m. As the Diamond Jubilee Executive Committee meet on Monday night that body de-: cided to meet half an hour earlier than usual and start their meeting at 7 p.m., [that will enable them to finish before Mr Holland commences his address.
