T’he Westland Power Board on Monday, assisted by Mr J. S. Langford, discussed the matter of the purchase of the Government water races at Kumara and Waimea. There were present Messrs \¥. J. Butler (chairman), J. A. -Murdoch, T. R. Cresterman, L. 11. Morel, B. Ward, R. F. Perham, R. Whiley. Apology for absence was made on be half of Alessrs T. W. Bruce and E. A Wells. The Mines Department wrote that it would fully consider the Board’s offer for the races in question, and that its decision would be later for warded. The Grey Power Board en quired what was the present position in the matter, while Mr T. E. Y. Seddou wrote on the subject stating that he had discussed it with the Minister of Mines. Air Seddon put forward a scheme for purchase. Mr Langford, from whom a letter regarding a reticu lation license and other matters was received, informed the meeting that he intended in a fortnight’s time to visit the districts of Kokatahi and Arahura to see the settlors as regards reticulation, provided the applications were satisfactory. The Chairman of the Boar] I.aid there would be no objection to M r Langford so doing. The Chapman then pointed out that as regards the Kuirara water races, the Board had not vet had from the Mines Department an official reply as to the offer made about, three months ago, and he moved that the Minister of Mines be informed other schemes for power were being

brought under consideration, and that the Board wisheil to learn the result of the offer made by the Board. On being seconded by Mr Ward and generally supported, the motion was carried. This was the gist of the business. At the Hospital Board monthly meeting the report showed 37 patients were in the Hospital on September Ist, and during the month 18 males and 15 females were admitted, a total of 70 patients being treated. Other figures were: Discharged cured 18 males, 1.1

females—29; relieved, 1 female: died. 3 males, 1 female —4; total discharged, 21 males, 13 females —34; remaining in hospital on 30th Sept. 17 males, 19 females—36; in hospital for two months 11 males, 9 females —20. The Treasurer reported receipts .£606/4/1, payments £llO7/1/11, debit balance £227 19/5. Accounts amounting to £390/9/4 were passed, and a schedule of outstanding maintenance accounts totalling £2643/3/9 was placed on the table. The town members were, appointed a sub-

committee to meet on Monday next and report to the Board on these accounts. It was decided 1o renew for seven years the agreement as to shelters at Cashmere Sanatorium with the Canterbury Board. Dr. Valintine notified he would visit here shortly. Air W. Hill tendered his resignation as wardsman at the Old People’s Home. Miss A. L. Jones was granted annual leave, and Mr T. W. Bruce (Secretary) four days’ leave; and it was decided to charge interest on overdue levies against Ross Borough Council, which forwarded two cheques for such levies.

The County Council resolved yesterday to curtail its general expenditure, especially on renewals, and to do as much work as possible without employing extra labour, also to have all expenditure directly supervised by a Council representative. It was decided

to try for three months the use of broken metal instead of gravel on roads used bv heavy traffic in the Central Killing, a temporary employee to operate the road roller and stone-crusher. Motorman Robinson is to be transferred to the road roller when necessary, and Roadman Bernhard will operate the lorry. The Overseer is to bo given assistance in preparing plans for speedier expenditure of Government grants. Alillers are to be consulted regarding road maintenance, ,whilc the question of a rate rebate of 24 per cent will bo considered when next estimates arc made up. Accounts amounting to £l7OB were passed. Motions of sympathy were passed to Or. Searle and ex-Couneillor McGrath on the death of their wives. The P.W. Department notified a refusal to declare the Kokatahi-Koiterangi road

Department notified that Richardson road was now under the Council’s care, and the Overseer reported £35 to repair it was needed. It was decided to obtain legal advise as to whether the Council is liable for £2OO necessary to clear Evans Creek, running through private property, into which floods have deposited trees.
