LIGHTER CREW’S WIN.
VARSITY BOAT RACE. LONDON, March 27. The boat race was must remarkable for Oxford’s surprising crack-up. The victory is jocularly regarded as one for brown sugar. Each Cantab received two spoonfuls when embarking as a tonic. Their spurt at Chiswick completely unscittled Oxford, whose No. 5 cracked badly, and thereafter scarcely rowed. It is revealed that the Cambridge coach, Esuombe, built uj> the crexv on Bell, wh o in the last fortnight- was the mainstay of their improvement, exercising as much influence as the stroke. Steve Fairbanks interviewed, said that Bell was the best man in both crcxvs. Oxford only feebly responded to Cambridge’s special deciding effort in the long straight to Barnes Bridge. Passing Duke’s Meadows, Cambridge were doing a pleasant practice paddle, smooth and effortless. 1 hey were never sufficiently pressed to ruffle the rhythm of their bladexvork. A neck and neck race might have told another talc, but licyond one scrappy catch, x\ hen Oxford xvas leading. The Light Bines outdid them in liveliness, catch drive, and length of stroke, though generally rowing fewer to the minute. A great crowd were watching the boat race at Mortlake, and as the great rising tide xvashed their ankles, niunv were unable, io press backwards. The ]>oliee boats rescued numbers of panic-striuken women caught in the backwash.
