SOUTH TIP REPAIRS

CARRIAGE OF METAL. RAILNVAY DEPARTMENT TO DO I WORK. ' IMPORTANT WORK TO PROCEED. At a recent meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board a report was presented by the Board’s Engineer (Air 11.. Watkinson) recommending extensive repairs to the South Ti]), at n»n estimated expenditure of £8386. A paragraph in the report stated that “as then* is no suitable stone in the quarry on the Grey mouth side, the stone' will have to be brought over from the Cobden quarry, and the question of a connection o»n to the. railway line or the Harbour Board line ai Hie south end of the Cobden Bridge arises. The rc])ori further suggested that, subject to the Railway Department s consent a H- chain curve be put in to ('(.•nnect with the Railway Department carriage. To obtain a connection with the Harbour Board line would require six diamond crossings which would cost about £lOO each, exclusive of laying. When the report was being considered members expressed the opinion that £it would be much more ecc’nomical for the Railway Department to run the material down, than for thc Board to go to the heavy expense of laying down new diamond crossings and carry the metal. So it was decided that the District Engineer be raterviewed in the h<»pe of satisfactory arrangements being made in this direction. And there the matter ended for some time, as the District Engineer was elsewhere. At the following meeting of the Board adverse conime’at was made by the ('hairman on the fact that, owing to the new railway arrangements, a very important .Board work was hung up. Matters, however, have now reached a satisfactory finality for. during the visit this week of the District Engineer (Mr A. . M(('roadie) and other ofiicials of the Department, a confer em-e was held with men bers of the Harbour Board and the *L*rision th;'! the Railway Department carry the iae tal( at a price agreed upon) was come to. Thus, an important work that lias hi en held ii]» fur s.iaie weeks mav now be proceeded wit h . Work of clearing tin* line on the • s on!h tip Io make it available for transport, has been < uiuinciiced.
