S uG AR TARIFF. MELBOURNE, October 13. Tn the House of Representatives, Mr Hughes, in vindicating the Government’s action in fixing a sugar tariff, explained that it would enable people to obtain sugar at 4 Ad per lb. Mr Charlton said that L Lour preferred a continuance of the agreement. Air Watt moved an amendment that the duty on sugar, the product of cane, both raw and white, be £9 6s Sd per ton. This was carried against the Government by 30 to 24. Tiie Minister for Customs moved the same duty on invert sugar and invert syrup, and £4 13s 4d on syrups. This also was carried.
