UNEMPLOYMENT.
IN AUSTRALIA. Union officials estimate that at present there are over 40,000 unemployed in New South Wales. This does not include the County of Y’ancowinna, which embraces Broken Hill. They state that the position of unemployed is worse to-day than they have known it to be for very many years. Included in the total are the following unemployed members of various unions:— United Labourers, 3000; Builders’ Labourers, 100; Amalgamated Engineers, 700; Meat Workers’ Union, 2000; Miscellaneous Workers’ Union, 200; Shop Assistants’ Union, 200; Restaurant Employees, 200; Operative Painters, 300; Federated Engine-drivers, 500; Factory Employees, 300; seamen, wharf labourers, and other waterside workers, 4000; Iron Workers’ Assistants, 4000; Coachmakers’ Union, 200. A large number of the unions are unable to give an estimate of their unemployed members, as the members do not notify the union when they are out of employment. In a statement issued on behalf of the Iron Trades Union, was stated that the closing down of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s steel works : Newcastle had resulted in the dismissal of approximately 4000 workers. To these must be added the thousands engaged in those manufacturing industries which depended upon the steel works for raw materials.
