KUMARA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). Mrs T. Rugg (Christchurch) and Mr M. Fitzgerald (Wellington) left for Christchurch on Saturday, via Otira. Mr Frank Roberts returned from Auckland on Saturday, where he spent a very enjoyable .Christmas holiday. Mr A. Spiers, who has not enjoyed the best of health of late, leaves for Christchurch to-day with her sister, Mrs G. Harcourt.

Some of our old-time dredge hands paid a visit to the Rimu Dredge last week, and were shown over the ship. They returned to town quite astounded at what they saw in comparison to their dredging days. Constable Fox leaves for Christchurch this week on his annual holidays. Mr Varney, District Health Inspector of Westland, is making a house to house inspection of the business places. He is accompanied by Mr Pamment, our local Inspector of Nuisances, and Mr Batson (chairman of Public Works). Mr J. Guy, district president of the U.A.O Druids, paid a visit to Kumara yesterday, when he installed the officers of the Pride of the West Lodge. He was accompanied by members of the Star of the West Lodge of Greymouth. The Blackwater Sawmill, which has been closed for months past, is now about to start next week cutting -white pine. The hand of death has removed from our midst one of the oldest residents of this district, in the person of MiMartin Ryder, who passed away at Kumara on Sunday at noon. He had reached the grand old age of S 7 years. He was a native of County Clare, Ireland, but had been over 50 years on the West Coast, first at Goldsborough, and since Kumara was rushed he has resided here. He leaves a family of three daughters, Mrs Kennedy, of Dunedin; Mrs Quinn, of Wanganui; and Mrs P. Daly, of Port Craig; and one son Mr Patrick Ryder, of Inchbonnie, who will have the sympathy of many friends. There, will be a private interment at the Greymouth Cemetery on Tuesday. Miss Marie Evison, daughter of the late Dr Evison, but now of Wellington, is at present spending a short holiday with friends here. Mr S. T. Peters, who is a martyr to sciatica, is at. present in the Westland Hospital for treatment. He has been a great sufferer for years, but it is hoped that he will sone speedily improve in health.
