ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT.
H. A. McQ., Weheka.— Penal servituce is an expression which used to mean imprisonment wth hard labour in lieu of transportation from Great Britain; and implied confinement in a prison. The expression therefore may be taken to refer to sentences of more or less lengthy duration, such as penal servitude for life. Imprisonment with nard labour, in contradistriction to the other, thus would connote sentences for shorter terms.
