The following is the report of the Matron for the months of November and December: — "Nursing Staff.— Ten members of the nursing staff were pff duty in Movember suffering from influenza, and one nurse away pn sick leave, thus reducing the staff carrying on the duty of nursing influenza patients to three (all unqualified) and myself. "V.A.D, Assistance. — 1 should like to record my great appreciation of the assistance, given . tp > us at this time "by the volunteer aid workers. It' is no exaggeration on my part, to say that the Inursing could not have been carried on during this last month without their timely services, and the willing and gracious way in which they carried out the difficult duties allotted to them was inspiring. ' f 'Domestic Staff .—I also wish to state that the domestic and laundry staffs have worked long and well, giving up recreation hours and;al| time off to assist in the work. I bave felt very deeply their loyalty both to the Board and myself at this time. ■•■..*■ CONSIDERATION OF SUPPLEMENTARY L*lV*Y.

The Chairman (Mr M. „ Hannan) quoted from the Public Health Act which stated that the Board could prepare an estimate for a supplementary levy. ' "What could be done was i to make an estimate of the amount required to carry the Board on till March 31st 1919. The local bodies had the right to object within 14 days. He took it that a local body could not pay out of ordinary revenue it could make a Supplementary Charitable Aid Rate. He enlightened the members on the situation which , had arisen through the epidemic, it was in his opinion absolutelynecessary t o strike the levy, whether it is \collected or not can be dealt with later on. If they did not istrike the >levy they could not fin-ajice. The cost or maintenance of the Hoard had no doubt risen through the high cost ot commodities. There was £2,217 not yet collected from the local bodies and which was owing to the Board, t He stated that the epidemic was responsible for £1,500. The £1,400 that will be payable by the local bodies is: Grey Borough (proportion) £735 3s j Grey County (proportion £595 2s; Kunanga Borough £48 11s 6d; Brunner Borough £21 3s 6d. If the Board got its portion out of the £lUU,OOU Government vote, the Board would be able to adjust its finances in April next. The Board would either have to strike the levy or suspend payment. . . Mr Smith moved that a supplement- , ary levy of £1,400 be struck on the local bodies in accordance with tho schedule drawn up. Mr Irvine seconded the motion which was carried.
