The Jockey Club Stakes, worth £10,---000, is amongst the events to be decided at the Newmarket first spring meeting. v TaringamUtu, who is entered for the Juvenile Handicap to be run at Trentham on Labour Day, is a filly with only one ear. Taringamutu is ttm Maori for one ear. Though no racehorses, had been commandeered at Newmarket up to the time the last mail left England, a number of trainers' and jockeys' hacks ha« been taken by the War Office. Two New Zealand-bred mares have foaled recently at Mr. Sol Green 's Shipley Stud, Victoria. Indian Queen, by Stepniak — Ranee Nuna, has a colt to Positano and Ingoda, by Stepniak — Armigera, a filly to Comedy King.

Edwards is expected to leave Sydney for Christchurch at the end of next week with the team of horses which, he intends to race at 'the spring meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitain Trotting Club. Among his contingent will be the New Zealand Trotting Cup candidates' Denver Huon and Dillon Bell, as well as Olive L., Wallace Wood, Adelaide • Direct and Bright Cloud. A meeting of the Woodlands Hunt was held this week, when pleasure was i expressed that Mr. G. Hunter's Gaming Bill had pasesd the Lower House. It was resolved to apply for a totalisator permit for the Hunt. The following were elected a deputation to back up the application: — Mr. G. Hunter, M.P., and Messrs E. Darley, W. Sullivan, J. Breeds, S. V. Rodney, and J. M' Cardie. A statement submitted in connection with the recent Hunt showed a small credit balance. Martius, the top weight in the Mosgiel Handicap, to be run at Dunedin next week, has not raced since he took part in the last Midsummer Handicap, when- he failed to secure a place. Martius has an unruly temper, and at times plays up at the post, but under ordinary conditions the weight allotted him in the Mosgiel Handicap should not trouble him to any extent/, He . has a .number of wins to his credit, including the North Otago Cup and Otago Handicap. He was second in the Dunedin Guineas, when he beat Warstep for the position.
