THE CAPTURE OF NEW GUINEA
THE- UNION JACK HOISTED. Received 10.45 P- m - SYDNEY, Oct. 6. The accounts from New Guinea carry the operations to September 13, when Herbertshohe surrendered. The capital Rabaul was occupied on the nth and found largely deserted. The Union Jack was hoisted on a ' proclamation being read notifying that the German Government had ceased to exist and exhoringi the people to continue their peaceful occupations. The troops marched through the town, and there was an impressive ceremony. Three hundred native police were taken over and sworn in. The health of the forces was excellent. It is stated that the seat of Government has been removed to Toma.
