RUSSIANS SUCCESSFUL. BIG BATTLE IN FRANCE. The High Commissioner reports from London under date of London, October 5, (4.15 p-m. as follows: — Official:— Tlie battle of Augustovo ended on Saturday with a victory for the Russians the Germans defeat being complete, and the enemy is now in a disorderly retreat towards the frotier of Russia with the Russians vigorously pursuing. On the left .bank of the Vistula and in Galicia the situation is unchanged. . , ;. Official -.—Paris reports that on our left wing a battle is in full progress in the Arras district. The fighting between the Upper Valley of Anrre and Somme and between Somme and Aisne is less violent. Progress is being made in the Soissons region, where the enemy's trenches have been taken.
