LIEUTENANT HOLDS GERMANS •AT BAY. OSTEND. Oct. 5. A sufc-lientenant named Hiernaux, in charge of a battery gallantly prevented the Germans rushing a strategically important bridge over the Scheldt connecting Termonde and Gaembrun. With a battery carefully hidden, he swept the German troops off the bridges. A second party of Germans who, were wrapped in mattresses, advanced, but were, shot down. A third attempt also failed. Then the German artillery found the range and routed the -battery. Hiermaux was killed, but his mine succeeded in blowing up the bridge.
