AVIATION
THE MISSING AVIATOR. (By Electric Telegraph— Copyright.) (Per United Press Association.) LONDON,May 2 6. The warshiDs- have abandoned the serach for Lieutenant Hamel. ADMIRALITY'S WARM TRIBUTE. LONUON^May^ 27. I The Admirality pays a'warm tribute to Gustave Hamel's services . as Britain's foremost exponent of the aviator '-.art. It appears, from the cable news, to be beyond doubt that Gustave Hamel the well-known aviator, has followed in the wake, of so many other airmen who have tempted fortune- in the clouds; A gentleman w,ho is at present in Hokitika, and who met Hamel in England several times last year Informed a ".Times" reporter yesterday .that Hamel, who was under thiray years of age was 'short in statue, slight in build, and clean shaven, and had a perpetual smile. He was one of the most poular, unassuming and retiring- airmen of the dey,and one of hte most successful of those connected with the Hendon and Brooklyn aerodromes. Last October he was the winner of the London Aerlai Derby. He was he firstto loop the loop with a lady passenger who, on that- occasion was Lady Denman wife of the tGovenor-General of the Commonwealth. Hamel had in prospect a trans-Atlantic flight. An instanse of his remarkable coolness in the presence of an emergency is effbrded by the fact that during the course of one race his, pe'rol-pipe burst. He finished the race keeping control of his machine whilst his thumb was pressed on the broken pipe. — Since last December, three of JHamel's bro- 1 ther aviators have been killed -1 Robert Slack, in a motor car accident and George Lee Temple and Philippe Marty, by falling- with their planes.
