SOCIETY'S GASTIGATOR

SINS OF THE SMART SET. FATHER VAUG-HAN'S COMING ATTACK. > (Per Independent Cable Service.) LONDON, May iS. Father Bernard Vaughan is going to give society another castigation. The famous preacher declares that 1 he intends to undertake a campaign against night clubs*, with a view to exposing the • sins of the smart set. At the same time he will denounce the wickedness of the unjust discrimination against the poorer classes. The many sermons already deihvered by Father Bernard Vaufi-han have been as striking as they have bedn fearless. This remarkable man, who comes of a .fighting- stock— for his father, Vaughan of Courtfield, Herefordshire, fought in the Crimea — is the only Romai> Catholic priest who ever numbered King Edward among his congregation. His Majesty, it is said, held him in high esteem. [The rev. gentleman has an exceedingly striking personality, and of him it was said at one time that the London theatres had lost to the Society of Jesus a stage manager who would have put the late Sir Henry Irving in the background. = His utterances are straight from the shoulder. When engaged on a fiery denunciation of the "smart set," he declared there were people in the East End who had nothing- real in their •existenre but their sins. He is/ not however without -a. sense of humour, and one day, while standing- beneath a famous picture of Henry V 111.., he was asked what he would do if his Majesty , were to step down from the canvas. Quick came the answer, "I should ask the ladies to (leave the room." "Thank you so- much." said a Nonconformist ministter to whom he offered a cigar on-s day; "I was not sent into the world to smoke!" "Ah," responded Vaughan, '* , derstand. I belong to a chmch which prefers to get 'its smoking done in this wiorld. I hiope you won't mind me lighting up." ' . .
