GREY BOARD'S MEETING

The monthly meeting of .'the Grey Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held yesterday was attended by Messrs M. Hannan (chairman.) J^ Hargrcaves, J. Finn, E. M. Sheedy, J. Tindale, G. E., Perkins. J. McCarthy, J. Giesking, J. Creagh, F. Campbell and G. Swcetman. • ' . CORRESPONDENCE. From the Treasury Department stating" that subsidy-, to the amount of .£93 19s 6d had been paid to the Board's credit. — Received. From the Valuer General stating that the ratable capital value of Greymouth Borough was .£689,938, Brunner .£20,154, Grey. County .£544,838, R.unan*ra Borough £4.3,340.. making a total of £1 ,298,270. and stating that the fee payable for forwarding the information was j£r us 6d. — Received. From Dr. Valintine. Inspector General, stating that the Government Statis li'cian estimated" the population of the Grey district at 14,155 and the ValuerGeneral returned the rateable capital value at £1, 298^270. — Received*. . Dr. Morice, applying for relief on behalf of the family of a patient now. an inmate of the Grey River Hospital. A report, from Inspector the family were in a destitute condition. It was decided to grant relief until the man was strong enough to resume work. • , From Sir A. R. Guinness, applying for relief on behalf of a resident of Cotiden. Inspector Fletcher .reported adversity on the application. The application was declined . From a resident of Gladstone Siding- applying for relief. Inspector Fletcher's report was attached. The application was received and no action, taken. From Sir A. R. Guinness applying for relief on behalf of an aged and decrepit Chinaman. .Inspector Fletcher's report- attached stated that] the case was a suitable one for relief. ' I It- was decided to grant 15s peri month. From a resident of Blackball applying for relief. Referred to the Inspector to report. From Sir A .R. Guinness applying for relief on behalf of a resident of Rapahoc. Inspector Fletcher's report was attached. . . The application was declined. From the Cliristchurch Hospital and Charitable Aid Board notifying that a resident of Greymouth had been admitted as a patient of the Christchurch Hospital- and stating that the Grey Board would be liable for her maintenance if she were unable to pay. — Received. 'Mr. Sheedy moved that the matron's salary be raised to £150 a year. j In speaking to the motion, Mr. Sheedy pointed out the. very valuable work .'dorm by. .This was seconded by Mr. Sheedy who remarked that if the bonus was 1 econ.mended by- Dr. ' Morice it was : a sufficient guarantee that "it was thor--ouglily deserved. . The motion was, carried. CONGRATULATORY Mr. Campb'cll said that as-'this was the last meeing of the present Board he wished to refer to the. excellent manner in which the Chairman (Mr. M.Hannan) had carried out his duties. \\ hen the present Board : tanife into being on tlic passing of the Statute Mr. Kannan had taken the chair, and had been of incalculable service to the Board when they were drafting, new by-laws and had, sayed them a great deal of legal expense. He would move tliat the hearty thanks of the members 1.0 M.r. Hannan- for his services: be recorded in the minutes. This was seconded -by Mr. Perkins and carried unanimously. The Chairman .briefly V' -returned thanks. He said that the work had always been a pleasure to him,, and as long- as he remained in the Board he would always do all that he could topromoteits • interest. As this was the last meeting of the Board and .as several of the membrs would not be j on the next Board he wished to tlvaiik I them for their services and- the courtesy extended to him. Messrs. € amp- ' bell and Bignell were not seeking re- 1 election and some of the borough i-e---prescntatives would not be comingback. He moved that a hearty vote of thanks be. accorded them, for their services. ■ This was seconded by. Mr. McCarthy and carried. : Mr. Campbell made eulogistic refer ences to the services of Mr. M. Phillips as secretary. -lie -had been instrumental in .getting-: Mr. Phillips ap'pointcd to the position, and the Board had some hostile criticism, at the hands of the Press and others. It was only proper that he should state that the confidence, he .'.and the Board had placed in Mr. Phillips had been fully justified and they; had in him the best secretary in "the Dominion. He would move that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr ; Phillips for his services. • This was seconded by Mr.: Sheedy, endorsed by other members and carried unanimously. ' Mr. Phillips thanked thc?Board for their kind appreciation of his work.
