COMMONWEALTH STATISTICS. SYDNEY, April 21. The Commonwealth statistician report shows that at the end of 1912 there Were 621 trades unions in Australia with a membership of 433,224 whereof 17,670 _ were females. The 1 unemployed represented 5i per centum of the community. Compared with 1891 the nominal rate of wages at the end of 1912 showed an increase of 12.7 per centunr; in Victoria, where the advance was the greatest and io per cent in Queensland, where it was 1 the lowest. Particulars, of the' cost of living show that in the six capital cities, the averageVcost ' was just over ten per cent, higher in 1912 than in -'i o*9-I, ' while the wholesale prices were 17 per cent higher. The results generally show that since 1896 there has been no material improvement in effective wages, while the productive activity per head of population is being . increased at a greater rate than the effective wage.
