DEPUTATION FROM BLACKBALL

COTTAGE HOSPITAL WANTED. Dr Hagan and Messrs Walker and Chiltern attended as a deputation from Blackball and Roa asking the assistance, of the Board in the direction of erecting a cottage hospital in fhe district. Dr Hagan pointed out thait ixi view of the large number of residents at Blackball and Roa, it was an absolute necessity to have proper facilitie s for treatment of urgent cases. Although there is a jfirst-clas s hospital in Greymouth and a tra ; n service, it is impossible to get- patients to the hospital until after great delay w?tich in many cases may endanger a paitient's- life. In fact one case recently was so affected by the delay and subsequent travelling that it practically caused death. He trusted that , the Board would realise that where such a great number of miners are employed the necessity for the existence of adeauate treatment is very great. At a large and representative meeting of the residents of Blackball and Roa held at Blackball two or three week s ago.it was unanimously resolved that this deputation wait upon- the Boord to ask their assistance. During his practice at Blackball during the past eigfiKfeeipi months several cases had occurred which were Teally quite unfi/t for transfer to Greymouth. He had tested the feeling of Blackball people and was confident that there would be a read3 r response in subscribing funds ;to assist in carrying out the project. Questioned by • the Ghairman 3 Dr Hagan said that the probable cost of a building and furnishing would cos,t from £800 to £1000, ond" would re^ quire a. nurse and general servant to maintain .the establishment., .. .There would naturally be voluntary contributions, and the Government subsidy, and they trusted ' to ' receive a fair share of support from this Board.' , The Chairman said 'that the matter must stand over for consideration of the' full Board but in the meantime full information as to requirements, and probable amoumt of contributions, might be sent to the Secretary. It was therefore resolved* that the matter stand adjourned till nexrt meeting. . ' ..■■'■•■':■•■■ » The depuation thanked the Board and withdrew.
