The Czar wrote on the margin of the official report of 'the death, a eulogy of Count Tolstoy's creations of the Fatherland's type of character.
Count Tolstoi .befone his death dictated the "message: '.'I am going away. Others remain who understand' the purport of thi s life. To them be it given out that I aimed at doing and failed."
The body, clothed in peasant dress, in a ppl an: <n oak coffin, iwas conveyed to Yasnaya Polyana. To-day's t)urial rites in accordane'e with Tolstoi's wish, were without relig-ious ceremonia>l. ■
Young aiad old, rich and poor, reverently kissed Count Tolstoi's hand.
There i s been resentment at the churches interdict of any rel:>gious observanoes at the funeral.
■The extremie right of the Duma passed a resolution" denouncing Tolstoi as the enemy of the Church and State.
