WALLSEND DEPUTATION
(To ithe Editor)
. \. ; Sir,— l see that Mr Lomas Franklin takes exception to my. letter regarding Mr A. C. Russell enrolling himself unasked as one of the deputation to go to Wellington regarding the re-f opening of the WaUsend mine. 1 should be very sorry indeed to mis-: represent Mr Russel or any other mai). But I thought it passing strange for Mr Russell to act as he did, and I think so still. I .am not even now aware that Mr Russell is a duly accredited representative appointed at the meeting. What the other delegates may have done .since I cannot say. .They may of course have appointed him in some informal way. I cannot see how the Mayor, .in ihe. position in which he has.plced himself, can . be said to represent either the citizens or the Borough Council in his official capacity. He may, •however, be made as useful at least as any of the other five " who compose the deputation. But why six persons? Let us hope tfiat they will not all want to -speak at onee — I am etc.," .
