Public Meeting

A meeting was held at the Council Chambers last evening for the purp>ve of formulating a progi-ame for the public meeting to be held at the Opera House at a future date to urge. upon the Government the advisability of completing tha Midland Railway line from Otira to Springfield. The Mayor moved that fke following gentlemen \k> a committee to carry out the arrangements. — Messrs Guinness, Oxenham, Ma/tteson, McLean", Berry, Kecr, Petrie, Sh^edy, Jay, Morris, Haraen, Harper, Gl^eson, Tennent, Merrett, Hart and Coates.j. Mr McLekn seconded. Carried. The Ma^&r moved that the . following resolution be moved at the public meeting —That in I the opinion of this meeting tli© Government be urged to complete the Midlaid Railway from' Otira to Springfield with all possible speed, and it is essential to call tenders for the tunnel ,so as |to ensure a completion of tho undertaking. . " Mr- Morris seconded. Carried. Resolve^ that an inyitetion. be issued to all the Mayors, Chairmen, and members of lopal bodies on the Coast, and anyone thai Hakes' an interset in the advancement of the district. Mr L<rd moved that the Premier be asked to attend the meeting., Mr O::enham seconded. Carried. It wsti resolved that the Mayor ascertain if he Premier will attend, and the date of the meeting be left with. Messrs Guinness Lord and the Mayor fix. • It was resolved that the representatives be entei tamed at a banquet, and- that the Bo?ough Council, County Council and Hafbour Board be asked to vote :i small sipsidy.
