MAYORAL ELECTION

GREYMOUTH

The above election took place yesterday and created a good deal of interest. Cabs and drags were flying around town bringing voters to the poll. The polling was fairly heavy, 10 6 votes being recorded. Theresuit came as a surprise to not a few who thought that Mr Steer would have an easy victory. Mr Petrie's supporters left no stone unturned and succeeded in gaining the victory. Shortly before 8 o'clock the Returning Officer announced the poll as follows : — Jas Petrie 556 J. Steer r .. 499 Informal ... 11 Majority for Mr Petrie 57. Mr Petrie in l-eturning thanks said' he would strive his utmost to prove worthy of the confidence placed in him. Ho thanked the ladies and gentlemen for their support. Mr Steer thanked his supporters and although beaten would ask that Mr Petrie be given every assistance He had endeavoured to carry out his duties faithfully whilst in office. BRUNNERTON. The contest for the Mayoralty created a great deal of interest. From start to finish the election was keenly fought.
