The programme of the concert and entertainment to be held in the Opera House oh Friday evening under the patronage of Lord Hawke's team and the Westland Cricket Association is now issued, and it is certainly one of the best ever placed before a West Coast au>Jieace. The numbers include Over.ures (piano dv«) by MescUmes J Thomson and Cadzow, scugsbytiie Misses Perkius, Maude Taic, Florrie Stapleton, May Driscoll, L Ward, Mabel Easson aud Mrs O'Hallahan, Messrs T H Coltuaan, W E Perry, G T Moss, and W B Uadzow. Duets will be rendered by the Misses Driscoll, Misses Tait) and Stapletou, Messrs Guthrie and Cadzow, and tiios by the Misses Tait, Ward and Stapleton, and Miss Kettle and Messrs Guthrie a*d Cadzow. Mr Fred Birkett will contribute a descriptive icena, "The Vagabond," and the performance will conclude with a screamingly laughable one act comedy by Mr Birkett, in which the characters will be taken by Miss Jessie Matheson, Mrs Birkett, and Messrs T Ryan, M Guthrie and the author. As the performers include the best musical ta ent of Wellington, Nelson, Hokitika and Greymouth, an entertaiument of exceptional merit and interest may be confidently looked forward to. In the course of a few weeks about eleven thousand acres of land in the Nelson district will, be thrown open for selection. Work was commenced on the Ross railway on Wednesday, when 38 men were set to work bush-falling etc. The partial result obtained from the trial crushing of ten tons of stone from tl«e Garden Gully mine must be highly pleasing to the shareholders. The crushing was done at the Mount j?j*paroa mine battery and resulted in a yield of 4 ozs 1 dwt af free gold from the ten tons of j quartz, or equal to 8 dwts 2-4 grs to the ton. As the quartz from the low level' tunnel is highly mineralized, this represeats a portion only of-the gold contents, beiug the free gold amalgamated in the boxes or saved on the top plush. From the crushing about two cwt of mineralized concentrates have been saved and this will probably be seat away for treatment, nob only to ascertain the gold percentage but to decide upon the best method of extraction. The gold contained in the concentrates will largely increase the gross yield of the trial crushing, but on the free gold basis alone, the large size and proved extent of the reef makes it undoubtedly one of the best mining propositions in the colony. The Rev Father Herbert will return to Greymouth early next week as assistant to the Very Rev Dean Oarew. VVe regret that the health it the Rev Father Kimbell will not allow his return to the coaat for a little while yet, but when it permits, with Father Herbert he will be permanently stationed at Greymouth, the necessities of the large parish requiring the services of hoth curates. The weather proved so bad yesterday morning thab the School Committee wisely decided to postpone the children's excursion picnic for a week. The Committee were loaded with a food supply sufficient for a thousand excursionists and most of it was of a nature that would not keep. The members of the Committee were, however, equal to the emergency. Upon request Mr Oxenham kindly and cheerfully placed the Gilraer sample rooms at their disposal and a grand and genuine clearing sale of the toothsome edibles was promptly inaugurated and maintained until a complete clearance was made. The Commifcteemen are to be congratulated on the success attending the pushful manner in which the sale was conducted. The attractions offered made it impossible for anyone to resist buying, and many well known citizens were tempted yesterday to invest in buns, tarts, etc, probably for the first time for thirty or forty years past. In many ways the sale was as gaod as a picnic. Yesterday was a red letter day in the Grey month annals of the Salvation Army, the occasion being thd visit of the principal officers of the colony and of Australia. Early in the evening the united S A Bands of Brunner, Blackball, and Greymouth played through the principal streets, and a large and effective open-air meeting was held at the Gilraer corner by Lieut-Colonel Gilmour, who has command of the colony. This concluded, an adjournment wa& made tc the Opera House, where Commissioner M'Kie, the Army leader for Australasia, and the visiting officers were formally welcomed by th« Rev Mr Trestrail on behalf of his people and Greymouth generally. Lieut Gilmour led in the ficst son» and in the musical service throughout the evening. Liet-Colonel Horakins, the principal of the training garrison in Melbourne, then addressed the meeting. He is a cultured and most pleasant speaker and made a great impression on the large audience present After a pleasing duett, well sung by two of the Army officers, Commissioner McKie came forward and delivered amid death like silence a most powerful sermon, taking for hia subject, " The Book shalJ be opened." The address was a thrilling and powerful one, and its effectiveness was shown at the conclusion by the large number of those present who were impelled to come forward. To use an Army phrase, "There was a splendid wind up." The Commissioner will conduct another meeting at the Opera House to-night and to-morrow will leave for Reefton, proceeding thence to Wellington via Westport. The English cricketers were to have left Nelson last evening and proceed as far as Motupiko |and leaving there this morning will reach lleefton to-night. Tney <ye due in Greymouth to-morrow by the 11 a m train, will be entertained at lunch at the Gilmer Hotel at 11 45 a m and play will commence at Victoria Park at one o'clock. An advertiser wants to purchase a boat suitable for use in connection with dredge werk. Particulars to be sent to Box 82. PO.
