They are accompanied by a female friend, Miriam Wray, who has gained the distinction of th 9 village flirt. Whilst In London the elder sister Allda, falls a prey to the seductive Influence of society, Into whloh aha la lured by Miriam Wray. She b comes a mother, but afterwards she forms the anqualnt* anoe of a wealthy baronet, who wishes to marry her. In order that she might throw off her part and marry, the younger aister Alice assumes the responsibility as a mother of her (liter's child. The marriage la aoaordlngly solemnised and Alice returns to her home after two year's' sojourn in London. JSoon after- = warda she marries George Hawthorne, with whom* she is very happy. KMlrlam Wray also returns 'disappointed at find* ing Alice happy/ and vows to^wreck the happy union.
