THE DEATH OF CARDINAL MANNING.

Cardinal Manning died this morning, At a meeting of the harbor board held yesterday afternoon the raport of the finance committee was read and received, and a nnmb r of accounts were passed for payment. The Chairman etited that the committee had received an offer of 7s per week for tho cottage recently occupied by Mr Hart, now the property of the board, but the late owner, Mrs Hansen, declined to give ap the key. The offer of 7s was accepted, and it was resolved that the Chairman take the necessary steps to obtain possession of the building. The Chairman reported that Messrs Hungerford and M'Kay had signed the contraot for the extension of the couth breakwater. There being no other business the meeting terminated. A meeting of the works | committee wa3 subsequently held to consider the report of the Engineer in regard to dredging. It recommended that the work be proceeded with as suggested by the harbormaster. The amount of shingle to be lifted would be about 8000 tons ; but before the dredge could start it would be necessary to erect staging and a viaduct crer the lines of rails on the reclaimed land. The report was adopted. The Governor and parly arrived at Pembroke, Latce Wanaka, on Wednesday evening, his Excellency being delighted with the trip and scenery. The party proceaded yesterday morning by coach to Queenstown. Among the rasaengers by the Mawhera yesterday was Mr Barlow, " the Blnetalled Fly," who comeß here after an absence of 26 years. We are glad to notice that Mr Barlow is hale and hearty, and that it is his intention to give several of lua initnitible entertainments.
