LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
3 Wellington, July 21. The Committee on the Oamaru station site petition reported that the prayer of the Council and burgesses against portion of the esplanade being taken for railwsy purposes was reasonable, and should be considered by the Council. The Hutt and Petone Gas Bill and the First Offenders Probation Bill we're read a first time.' Tha-Jodunties Bill was further considered in committee. Clause 157, dealing with special rates, was amended so as to provide that the special rate shall not exceed three farthings'., in the pound on the capital value. A number of clauses wereagreed to, and the Council took the dinner adjournment at 5 o'clock. The Council resumed in committee on the Counties Bill at 7.30. Shrimsjki moved clause 289, providing for t)ie i/maintenance of Agricultural Schools f|6>m County funds, be struck out. On a division the clause was eliminated. i Clause #01, providing that County 6ouncils niay support public libraries, was EJtruck'.out. Progress was reported, and the .Council adjourned to 9.30.
