FIRES.

Hawera, January 6. An unoccupied four-roomed house owned by Mr Weblig was discovered on fire this morning, and together with another owned by Mr Magon, and occupied by Mr Squire, a painter, were burned. The insurance on the occupied house is LBOO in the Union office. The other house was not insured. New Plymouth, January 6. A six-roomed house on York road, near Midhurst, was burnt yesterday. It was owned by Mr Worms and caught fire when the family were out milking. The fire commenced near the chimney. The building was insured for L2OO, and the furniture for LIOO. Nothing was saved. Dunedin, January 6. A fire has broken out in the Fernhill Coal Mine, and the mine has been blocked up for the present. Christchurch, January 7. At 3 a.m. to-day a fire occurred near Lancaster Park, whereby a shop and dwelling house owned and occupied by Henry Edge, and a cottage belonging to Mrs Stewart, were destroyed. Edge's premises are insured in the New Zealand Offi c for LIBO, and the stock and furniture in the Equitable for L 250 ; and Stewart's house in the Colonial for L2OO. The fire began in Edge's kitchen, and is supDosed to be accidental. Auckland, January 6. An unoccupied cottage of four rooms at Parnell was burnt down this morning. Tt belonged to Mr John Ellison, and was insured for Ll5O in the New Zealand office.
