The following is the .report of the committee on Lhe North Island Main Trunk Railway route : — Your committee met in accordance with | the order of reference made by the House on 13th September, and held daily sittings until it had taken all the evidence available. Your committee held 19 meetings and examined 34 witnesses, and the following resolution was arrived at, viz. — To recommend the central route from Marton to Te Awaniutu as the best for the North Island Trunk Railway. Invercargill, October 10. Another fire occurred in Dee street this ' morning. The alarm was given aijo.3o'a m. when the shop of W. Brown, draper, was observed oh fire. The brigade were early in attendance, but this part of the block consisted of six wooden tenements, and nothing could be done with the appliances

in use to save them. The flames spread . rapidly, and only ceased when the corner of ; the block was; reached the following, buildings were destroyed — Brown, draper^ Moody, fishmonger ; Stean, hairdresser ; Crawford, boarding house;. Riordan,fruiterer; and Tomlinson, saddler. ■ The brick . warehouse of Sargood Son and Ewan, to the rear of the wooden houses, 5 was mr danger for a time, but was saved through pulling down the intermediate^ buildings; : No stock was saved 'from (Browns, but a good deal was saved from the other places. The shop in which the fire broke out was next to the brick pre-, mises destroyed some months ago, and now being rebuilt. In addition to -the pther buildings a branch shop of H.
