CANADA AND AUSTRALIA.
— Lord Lome delivered a long lecture at Birmingham on December 5, on " Canada and its products." He particularly praised the salubrity of the climate, and said that the fevers -which were common in the United States were unknown within the boundaries of the Dominion. He lauded Canada as a field for emigration, and expatiated upon the marvellous progress made by various towns. Said the speaker in conclusion, "With the Dominion of Canada and the Australian Colonies in close relation, England need never fear that: her proud position in the world will be shaken or questioned."
The Marquis also read a paper befo ' the Colonial Institute in London, in th s course of which the folloAving remark occurred: — "Information in regard to the prospects in\-life in the Colonies should be given schools. If the information could /'be readily obtained it is difficult to believe so many psople would remain here' without occupation. The area of Australia and Canada is so vast, the -fertility of the soil so remarkable,-, and the rapid increase of their population so certain' that within the lifetime of children of. gentleman here present their numbers will equal ours, and in another century they, will be greatly superior to us in men and wealth. Our Colonies giA r e foreigners an apparent advantage over us. It is still our policy to remain their closest allies. The first step to keep them in alliance is to Avork Avith them, pushing their commerce."
