THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY. FRI DAY, JANUARY 25, 1884.

His Honor Judge Broad left for Hokitika yesterday morning. He will probably return to-morrow, It would seem from the weather of the last couple of days tliat we are at last about to enjoy an instalment of real summer weather, a luxury that has been ' denied to us as yet this season. A serious fire occured at Nelson Creek yesterday. A first-class cottage, belonging to Messrs Ward and Sexton, two old and respected residents of the district, was

jurrt to the ground. They are very heavy losers, as they lost a large 3tock of provisions, two guns, a ten-guinea ivateh, twelve pounds worth of gum and sther ' boots, all their clothing, bo ides 3lose on £40 in cash. Mr Sexton estimates that it would take £150 to replace bhe loss. Great sympathy is felt for them, as they were left nothing but what they stood up in. " Late telegrams in brief. — 13. -T- Von Dadelzer is gazetted Deputy Ilj^istrar General for the colony.— The weather throughout the colony yesterday Avas fine excepting at Nelson, where it was pouring. — Lady Jervois and Miss Jervois left Wellington for the Bluff to join His Excellency. The latest intruder on the domains hitheito supposed to be sacred to the grateful and exholirating " Roederer" is Wachter's champagne, which appears to have forced its way amongst the connoisseurs of Europe, though as yet not much known in this colony. The Hotel World, a trade journal considered it a fact of sufficient importance to its readers to notify that at the Royal dinner party at Balmoral, at which Sir Garnet Wolseley was the distinguished guest, Her Majesty drank the health of the illustrious general in Watcher's " Royal Charter" champagne ; in fact this wine is considered the "palace wine" in London. It is no wonder that a beverage that finds its way into such good society should be affected by Mrs Langtry, -who of course is nothing if not fashionable. Messrs Griffen i and Smith are the Greymouth agents for j this new brand, and therefore responsible for its introduction to this part of the world. It is enough to say that Wachter's champagne possesses all the qualities of this favorite wine. SirE. O. Gibbs, Under Secretary of the Education Department, arrived here yesterday, and we presume he will shortly have his hands full of the legacy of educational business through the demise of the late Board. The Hokitika morning paper says on this subject : — " It is understood that Dr Giles has been requested to act in this district, and Mr Calders, Postmaster in the Grey district, to communicate with the various school committees, and to transact absolutely necessary business. The inspector of schools, Mr Smith, and Mr Robinson, secretary to the late Board, will be retained in their present positions temporarily in order that Dr Giles and Mr Calders may make arrangements to sustain the schools in their present state of efficiency. So far as tho Westland Commissioner is concerned, if he may be so termed, Dr Giles's appointment will be highly satisfactorily." The Rev. Father Halwachs, late of the Wairarapa, lias been appointed to the charge of the Reefton Church, The Fiery Cross Extended Company have arranged definitely to start crushing on the Ist proximo. By that time a good parcel of stone will be in readiness for the stampers. A Westport paper thinks that their Greymouth friends will display uncalledfor selfishness if they object to theKaiwai being sent to Westport, especially when she is rusting for want of work. The best coal record on the Westport incline was made last Friday, when 54 trucks, containing 3!)0 tons of coal, were lowered Twenty-eight of these trucks were brought down at one time — the longest coal train yet run on the line. No fewer than 1100 tons were shipped on Friday (says the Times), all tho steamers being despatched on the tide succeeding their arrival. It is very pleasing to see the trade devclopiag into such vigorous growth, despite obstacles, chief amongst which is th unsatisfactory state of the harbor bar. A conversazione will be held at the Volunteer Hall this evening at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of welcoming the Rev C. W. Jennings to the district. The Combination Company arc advertised to open at the Public Hall on Tuesday next. Messrs Nancarrow and Co. will sell by aiv tion at their rooms, at 11 o'clock this morning a quantity of boys an d youths' clothing. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will sell at Preston yards, at three o'clock this afternoon, 40 prime fat porkers. Mr \V. C. Gilbert, dentist, has returned from Reefton, and can be consulted at his residence as usual — [Advt.] Greenwood and Son, Dentists, Wanganui, next visit to Greymouth in April. — Advt. Thirty years have elapsed since Wolfe'* Schnapps was given to the world, and by common consent of the people it now ranks as the only medicated stimulant which effectually tones the stomach and the nerves. — [Advt.]
