WAKEFIELD AT SELWYN.
Mr Edward Wakefield addressed the electors at Selwyn last night. Beginning Avith a retrospect of his political experience, he gave his story of his opposition to Sir George Grey, and his connection with the party at present in power. He then referred to the Government opposition to his candidature at Inangahua. He had seen a great falling-off in the administration after th-> session of Sir John Hall ; since Avhich time there had been no good or honest Government in NeAV Zealand. On its becoming knoAvn that he intended to contest the Inangahua elec-^ tion, he receiA^ed a telegram from Wellington asking Avhat his platform was to be. He replied that his platform was the same as it had always been, leaving it to the Government to say whether theirs Avas altered or not. He had then been asked if he required assistance, to which he replied that he Avould Avait till he had consulted his constituents. Government at once took this to mean that he was no supporter of theirs, and put Mr Shaw into the field against Mm. He had no confidence in the present' Government, and he Avould go to Wellington as a supporter of the Opposition. He then proceeded to explain his political opinions in detail.
