CALL AGH AN CHEEK.

The miners here are jubilant that a satisfactory arrangement as far as they ! are concerned is made in respect of Larkin : and party's application to divert the creek: water from Callaghan to Nelson Creek. Hawk and Williams's party are now working on a. run of gold further ■ . back by several hundred yards than any .:l old ground. It is supposed to be a continuation of the same lead that has been -, traced in an unbroken line from Cocka- - bulla Creek to this point, which was being worked by head-water brought; in races, for which certificates of registration were 1 5 issued when Nelson' Creek Was yet'unbroken ground. It has ever 'since supported a steady mining population, chieflyoccupied in ground-sluicing. At the upper part of Little Callaghan Creek, and at an elevation of about 200 ft i. above its junction with the main- creek, :■ one claim is in work. The ground held by the owner, P. Flaherty, would be com-, ? . , manded by the Hochstetter race; and ; there is ground many hundred feet higher which contains gold to. pay with water, but it is supposed the big race will not be * at sufficient elevation to reach it. In fact, for many miles from this point, in a line parallel with the creek, there is a similar kind of countryawaitirig the in!- 1 ' : troduction of water before it can be occupied and profitably worked. M'Derntt and party are working the highest up the creek, and they are sluicing in the same description of ground. Their race is the - largest; l and has the greatest elevation of ' l any, but unfortunately for the proprietors they possess the last right out of five to the water. However, it is a property vr hich will become more and more valuable. The hdlders' of water' rights in the creek are considering what regulations will be made in the event — which is certain to

occur —of large companies occupying ground above them in the ranges, and running tailings and silt down on the lower claims. At a meeting held here recently, this matter was discussed, and a complant was put in that such a miserable patch as 60ft x 60ft of ground was too small an area for an ordinary claim Such a claim is soon worked out, the result perhaps not paying for making a single tail-ditch. An alteration should be made so that each, holder of a miner's right could legally occupy an acre of ground, or at the least half an acre, without the trouble, expense, and inconvenience of posting notices of/ application for registration, and paying exorbitantly for certificates, surveys, &c. The Scotch party are now working near Shannahan's in divisions of two each. The last four years' work haying exhausted all the readily available ground hereabouts, this party will shortly have to extend their race. . j
