Melbourne. — The Argus, of the 6th instant, reports : — In the import market to-day a considerable amount of business has been transacted, chiefly at auction, however, the more important sales having reached us through that medium. Flour is moving off slowly at Lll 15s to Ll2 for town brands in bakers' parcels. Under the hammer in the forenoon Lll 7s 6d to Lll 10s was accepted for country brands. Wheat is very firm, and being wanted, is saleable at ss, while 5s to 5s Id was obtained by auction. Privately, nothing special has been done. Feeding grains are very steady. Oats have been quitted at 3s 2d to 3s 2£d. A small parcel of new realised ,3s..?d v ...Xhft. quality of this season's growth is well spoken of. Maize is - very saleable indeed at"3S." A line of 750 bags was placed at the price, and a larger trade could be done -were holders more willing to quit. The business transacted in sugar was a great feature, and attracted a good deal of notice. The Flodden's cargo of Mauritius, comprising 7281 bags, was offered in the forenoon, and buyers being willing, the whole was speedily cleared off at prices ranging from 26s 3d to 27s for rations, 28s 6d to 29s for low browns, 32s to 33s 3d for low yellows, 34s to 34s 6d for medium grainy yellows, 35s to 35s 6d for fine yellows, 363 to 37s 3d for fine grey counters, and 39s for fine soft whites ; 2096 bags of the China Refinery Company's new sugars were quitted at L 39 5s to L4O for fine whites, L 35 10s to L 36 for finest yellow counters, L 34 10s to L 35 10s for good yellows, and L 32 15s to L 33 10s for medium counters ; 1507 bags yellow Java sold at L 33 15s ; 654 bags of Queensland also realised fair rates. These prices establish-a slight improvement on fine whites. Hops continue to meet with favor. A shipment of medium quality 1872 Kents,. about 60 pockets, was quitted at Is 7d. A very superior parcel of Bavarian Spalb hopsj 18725, about 40 cases, realised a very extreme figure, almost a fancy price— as much as 2s Id is stated to have been realised. An invoice of Black Swan twist, 19 halves and 31 quarter-tierces, to arrive per Rainbow (the only shipment advised), has been taken up on terms withheld. Sales of cornsacks are mentioned at 153 9d. In liquids there is not much to refer to. Edmonds's pig brand of stout is offering at 12s, and we note an easier feeling in the market.
