NELSON CREEK.

(from a correspondent.) February 2. . Considerable excitement took place here when it became known that the longtunnel parjfcy .on Hatter's Terrace had found payable gold. A rush therefore set in to the deep lead, and the ground was quickly taken up to nearly opposite: Tryagain Terrace. There is no longer any doubt as to the continuation of, the load, on the strength of which four new tunnels have started ; each party consisting of 10 men, comprising two five men's claims amalgamated. The distance to be driven is very considerable, no less than 1400 ft A good deal of dissatisfaction is felt by the miners here. on account of the small claims allowed;: for such heavy undertakings. . I have been informed that even extended claims could not be. obtained by the Warden ; some provision ought to be ..made regulating the si?e of claims according to the expenditure of labor and capital required, for bringing the • ground . into working order. The Scotchmen's tunnel, Lam ! sorry to say, is not. low. enough by three feet to bottom the deepest ground. They are therefore under the necessity of deepening their drive all the way. The prospects obtained by this company vary from three to six grains to the dish. Three feet of wash-dirt, which I believe will average loz to the load. - Everyone here is highly elated with their success. That other claims may turn out better than their prospects is the. wish of every one liere. The business men on Try-again Terrace, : after waiting in vain for many-months for some enterprising men to bring in a waterrace, have joined* together; in supporting four men to bring one in from Nelson's i main creek. As it would talte too much ■ time and oipital to get the water on' the • top of the surface, it is intended to bring i the race within 15ft of the edge of the i terrace and wash all from top to the bottom ; by laying tramways, and trucking it to i the shoots erected, which will, convey the i stuff to the boxes. That the/ground will i pay for working in this manner cannot be i questioned, as* there are different parties i working already in the same, way, making $ use of the tail water of tail-races dammed • up, earning from LI per day?j|jdr pian and , upwards. .i|jj'i> r ;.rL.'' ; • j The principal other wording are. going I on in the neighborhood of "Dry ; Gully, I where a good few are still working witl: 3 fair results. A share was sold there during i --the week in a tunnel claim for L 26. Very ) good ground for ground-sluicing does exiai I here in abundance ; but the level ia sc b high that to reach it with water-races thej s would have to be brought many miles.
