NELSON CREEK.
(from a correspondent.) Jan. 13. The usual detention of mining caused by the holidays and sports has passed by, and operations have commenced again once more. The sports, excepting an accident produced by wrestling, through which a miner named James Allen had his collarbone broken, were performed to the satisfaction of all, and taken as a whole may be considered as a fair success, About 300 people were assembled, who enjoyed themselves in a quiet and respectable manner, highly creditable to the mining community. John Adams and Co, a party of 10 men who are driving in a tunnel from Lagoon Terrace to the deep lead, have struck the deep ground at a distance of 1200 feet. They expect to find the lead of gold in a few days. There is every probability of these men getting well rewarded, which they richly deserve, for an undertaking of such magnitude. In anticipation of the lead turning out well, several new claims have been marked out within these past few days. Another tunnel will start shortly. About eight .miles up the main creek a good few parties have set in to work, getting more or les3 gold. . It is believed that something good will yet be found in that direction. . . Darcy and party have their water.- wheel in working order, and have commenced to sink their paddock. At Try-again Terrace some miners have set in to work the headings, which they find quite a profitable speculation, as some can earn LI per day easy, in trucking and washing. At German Gully, 30 men ate employed in various places, with different success. To show that some superfluous money is in circulation in this place, I may mention that a well-contested foot race forLsa.--side, distance 200 yards, took place last Saturday, by which a considerable sum of money changed hands. The terraces opposite Try-again are, getting another trial, James Bird and mates having set in there ground sluicing with fair results.
