Mubdebous Assault. Henry Petersen was brought up on remand from Monday charged with having assaulted Matthew Anderson with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. Gordon Anderson deposed that on Sunday night last, at about midnight, while walking along the South Town belt near Durham street, he heard somebody coming up behind him. Prisoner then passed him, and after going a few steps turned round and attacked him with a billhook. Prisoner made two or three blows at witness with something, whioh afterwards be found to be a billhook. Witness bad on a hard shell felt hat; it wes cut through, and witness received a scratch on the hand in defending himself. He called out "Police," and detective O'Connor came up and arrested prisoner. Detective O'Connor corroborated the above evidence as far as he was concerned. Prosecutor was slightly the worse for liquor. Prisoner made a stitsment to the effect that he was walking quietly along the belt when prosecutor, who waß very drunk, came up and, seeming to be f lightened, called out "Murder" and "Police." Prisoner had not struck him, nor had he intended to do so. Prisoner then pleaded gui'ty to taking a billhook belonging to Peter James Stevens. He said he had intended to return it. . Prisoner was further charged with stealing a pair of trousers and u vest. Ellen Austin, residing in Montreal street, deposed that on Sunday morning prisoner went into her house and asked for money. On her refusal he went to a box and took out a boy's trousers and vest, value Bj, with which ho went away. James Ashwin, a dealer, deposed to prisoner offering the clothes for sale, when they were detained. The police stated that prisoner was the man who, a day or two ago, received forty-eight hourß' imprisonment tor illegally entering a lady's house. Prisoner behaved in a most extraordinary manner in thedook, talking and laughing in a loud and idiotic manner. He was remanded for twenty-four hours for medical examination, the Bench giving it as their opinion that he was insane.
