Satisfaction is expressed at the presence of a United States frigate in those waters, as the Natives who murdered the May Queen orew are believed to be the same as murdered Johnson, an American trader. An American warship is expected to demand reparation. A deputation waited on the Governor to represent the scarcity of labor. Tho Governor said said, owing to a miscalulation by the Agent-General, and the difficulty of obtaining suitable vessels, labor would be scarce this year. Another lot of 150 coollies have been placed on the estate of the Sugar Refining Company. Measles are still prevalent in some part of the grejp. THAMES, July 18. The Flood. The estimated damage by the flood to local works, the county water raoe, borough reservoir, oulverts, creeks, bridges, &3., is £20,C00. Some of the storekeepers are completely ruined. The opinion is now oonfirmed that it was the result of a waterspout, for localities each side of the borough are comparatively little injured. The county and borough authorities have telegraphed to the Government for assistance. WELLINGTON, July 18. The Recent Boiler Explosion. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, John Simpson, keeper on the hulk on board which the boiler exploded, was committed for trial on the charge that he did knowingly and wilfully fasten down the safety valve of the boiler. Bail was allowed, himself in £ICO and two sureties in £SO each. The Mails The s.s. Australia, with the London mails of the 16th ult., left San Franoisoo for Auokland, on Sunday, the 3rd inst., one day later than time-table date. The s.s. City of New York, with the June colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 24th inst., time-table date. INVERCARGILL, July 18. Sentenced. At the Police Court, to-day, Hugh Barlin, alias Baldwin, who was oonvioted on fifty charges of obtaining goods by the issue of valueless oheques, received cumulative sentences amounting to eighteen months. The Magistrate commented severely on the readiness with which storekeepers took cheques from unknown parties.
