AUCKLAND AS IT IS.

A Christchurch man, now in Auckland, writes as follows

Auckland is, to my thinking, behind Christchurch In many respects. There is but one morning and one evening paper as dailies. There are several weeklies, but none as, I think, equal to Chi Ist church ones. In consequence of the hilly nature of the country, the streets and most of the high roads are laid over sharp grad'ents, and the public conveyances are of a lumbering character, and badly horsed. One misses the dash and smart turn-out of the Christchurch Hansoms and tho trams. The police go gloveless, and look en awkward lot. Hundreds of children run barefoot through the streets. Excepting in one street, Queen street, of about half a mile in length, there are no buildings of business impoiiance. and many of those are worn out and look as if they want pulling down. Altogether tho Southerner is not favourably impressed with the town; but outside, and beyond the suburbs, the country presents most beautiful views of landscape scenery in all directions, and the soil appears to be as fertile as the climate is mild. In gardens, with shelter, grow the orange, lemon, loquat, limes, and guava, all now in fruit. The camellias are largo trees with fine bloom, and such plants as the heliotrope, and other tender subjects, eland out the year round. The people here are mostly a long-faced pions lot, that could not raise a smile for the world, and they look on strangers with a jeolous eye.
