The Maori sails for Bluff to-morrow morning. Auckland, August 16. Evans, of the Pacific Hotel, was lined £24 and costs for a breach of the Licensing Act in connection with a recent case of Sunday liquor selling. Un Saturday a public meeting of citizens was crowded, and many were unable to obtain entrance to the hall. The Mayor pre-
sided. The I Ait resolution proposed was that provincialism should bo abolished, but the mover could not gain a bearing until Mr Hoes begged the meeting to give him fair play. Mr Rees afterwards moved as an amendment a motion adverse to the Government measure. The motion was the same as that carried at Eden and Parnell. This Avas received with enthusiasm, and carried almost unanimously, only four bands being held up for the mover’s motion. The meeting terminated with three cheers for Sir George Grey. Wellington, August 1(5. A meeting was held at Masterton on Saturday evening, on the abolition question. Mr Bunny, M.H.R., addressed the meeting, and admitted be bad always boon in favour of abolition, but be opposed the present Bill as imperfect, maintaining it should be submitted to the people, and decided upon at the next general election. Mr Andrew, M.H.R., replied, and went for immediate abolition. Four Provincial Councillors were present. Three favored abolition. A resolution in favor of going to the country was proposed, and then an amendment, recommending abolition during the present session. Thirty-seven voted for the amendment, and thirty-eight for the resolution. The chairman, who abstained from speaking, said if bo bad a casting vote it would be given for abolition.
