ANIMATED SCENES ON WATERFRONT. TOTAL TONNAGE EXCEEDS 4,636. “Quite like old times,” was an expression hoard frequently yesterday as passers-by stopped -along Read’s Quay Oi- on Kaiti bridge to view tlie waterfront, which was a hive of industry. Four vess:ls were in port, threo working to full capacity, and the rattle of winches continued «n----cueasingly. The tonnage exclusivr o! trawlers and smaller craft, totalled 4605, very good indeed for an “ofl” day.
' Lying alongside the northern wharf Was the Pakura (719 tons) discharging general cargo from Wellington, and talcing in goods and a large number of benzine drums ' for a return trip to the southern port. At the stern of the; Pakura was the. lighter Tiroa, on' which routine work was being carried out. Jhn Kalingq, (2047 tons), occupy- _ the greater part of the eastern wharf, was discharging from two holds Newcastle coal and general cargo fvom Sydney. , The TVainui (163-3 tons) was lying at the southern whar.f unloading her usual cargo of produce and genei'ulv oargnr from Dunedin, Timaru, ton, Wellington and Napier.
