IMPORTS Old ORANGES BAN LIFTED ON SOUTH AUSr THALIAN FRUIT COOK ISLANDERS ALSO TO BE ENCOURAGED (Press Association). WELLINGTON. May 19. The Minister for Customs (Mr Nash) this afternoon -said that, for sometime, the Government had been giving consideration, to the (piesiron oil the importation of orWngeti; which would be required this year to supply the Dominion’s needs. As is well known, the prosperity of the people of the Cook Islands is dependent to w considerable extent on the exportation of oranges to New Zealand and it it* the desire of the Government to ensure, as far as. possible in conformity' with the geineral public interest, that the islanders are assured of a reasonable, opportunity or marketing their product in the- Dominion. Present indications are that there will be a greater quantity of Cook Island oranges available this year than during the previous two years. Even allowing for the greater production, however, it will be necessary for oranges to be imported iro-m other sources adequately to meet 'the public requirements. In the meantime,- therefore, it had been decided to relax the existing embargo against Australia to the extent that permission hhd been granted for the exportation to New' Zealand during the months of June, July, and August of 50.000 eases of South Australian oranges and it is' expected that) this- quantity, together with importation's which will be available from other sources, will amply meec the PomiMon’iS needs. Should it be - found that the supplies from the Cook Islands do nek reach the quantities which it is expected will be imported, the Government will consider allowing further importations Iron) South Australia^ , -f .
