FORTNIGHTLY meeting The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening, Tlio Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P.," pre'skled; and there were presen/t Crs. H. E. Maude, H. l-lolmes, D. S. Thompson, J. Hall, and H. H. DeCosta. Messrs G- Morley arid. W. 11. Zealand wrote approving of the j council’s overdraft, limit of £25.000 j being continued for the current fin- ! uncial year. —The letter was received Fifteen ratepayers and. tenants of bius'inesisi premises in Derby street forwarded a petition waking consideration of an application to have Derby street between Gladstone road andi Childers road paved with hot mix. The matter was referred to the estimates committee. A petition signed; by 78 resident's of Herbert road and the upper end of Palmerston road asked the council to hitumenise Herbert! road' and make improvements in the footpath. It was stated that the Gladstone road drain hacks up Herbert road and covers the footpath, for about hall] a. chain within ai chain of Gladstone road.—The matter was referred to the estimates! committee. The Conciliation Commissioner forwarded citation in the industrial dispute between tho Painters’ arid Decorators’ Union iwidl the employer?.—- ! The letter was received. On behalf of residents of Uulwcr road, Te Hnparn, Mr F. Told ton wrote asking that, the council extend the sewerage system to that street before the coming winter. The residents had been paying rates on a special loan for 15 years.—On the moion of the Mayor it was decided to refer the matter ',o the works committee.

The town clerk. Wellington, wrote asking the council’s opinion in regard to the proposed speed limits for heavy motor vehicles. The town clerk 'and the traffic inspector were asked to confer and furnish a. reply. The district engineer. New Zealand railways, sought permission to make alterations to the siding into the Refrigerating Co.'s premises.— The matter was deferred.

The secretary of the Cook Hospital Board) wrote seating that the Board had decided to provide on this year’s estimate's for the cost of. resurfacing the hospital, roadway and coating’ it with bitumen. If the expenditure was approved by the Health Department the board would request the council to proceed: with tliei work at r ho same time that the reading to the boundary Was carried out by the Borough Council.—The, engineer was instructed, to proceed with the work.

BRICK AREA) IN TOWN The F'ire Board wrote urging the council to enforce its decision regarding brick areas as by the gradual extension of wooden buildings irhey would eventually become a menace not only to themselves hut to adjoining buildings. The Mayor explained' that the letter was in connection with a building perm'l, which had been granted for extensions to an iron shop. It would he unreasonable he said, to insist that the extensions should he built of brick.

Cr. Thompson said that the extension amounted to-50 per, cent, of the budding. The Mayor -stated, that the plans and specifications had ten subnr'ttod to the council before the exunKioiij of; tho brick area to that u "strict.

It was decided to reply to the tore Board explaining that a-spoct of the case and! to state lint it is the council’s intention in future to that the by-laws are complied with. On the motion of Cr. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE The public works- committee’s report stated*, inter alia:— Tenders were considered for the supply of oats, bran, sanitary pans and lids, and the committee recommends that the lowest tender bo accepted. In regard to tender*! for the supply of chaff, it was decided to hold over in the meantime acceptance of a tender, pending the engineer inaking i'uithcr enquiries. A list of contemplated works, for the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, the principal works being, cleaning open drains, gravelling footpaths, trimming trees, Nesbitt road stormwater drains and reinstatingfence Makaraka. Tlie engineer inspected the Makaraka creek and reported that the alterations made to the original course of the creek) wor© in no| way responsible for tho washout in Jellicoe street.

A firm of stock buyers requested that a. coating of metal chips: be placed on the decking of the Mangapapa, and Wiliam Pettio bridges, and the approaches thereto, to prevent the bruising of fat cattle on the way to the freezing works. The committee recommended that as this class of work cannot bo undertaken at this timo of the year the mhtfer be considered at a, later date. Tho report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE

In its fortnightly report the finance. committee, .stated that the scheme outlined by the Local Authorities’, Buye-s for co-ordinating the major buying requirements! cf afljl; local authorities, received tho consideration of the committee, and it, is recommended that, this orgnnisa,ton be invited to obtain quotations fur the ouncil’s bitumen supplies for tho current, 'year, but the council to be under no obligation to accept any quotation. The. report was adopted.
