NOTES AND NEWS
Lavish, a three-quarter sister to Davolo, was jilaced in her first two starts at the beginning of the season, and was then turned out. Sbo is again in full work at Awapuni and looks improved. Dawning Light, an early 2-yoar-old winner, is also being sent along in earnest.
Tho brilliant two-year-old filly Slretto. by Hunting Song from Lucella, was taken to Ellerslic from Te Awamutu on Saturday and is temporarily under the care of .7. M. Buchanan, who will ship her to Sydney by the Wanganella on Friday. She is to join F. McGrath’s team at Rand wick and it is •understood that sho will be accompanied on the trip by On Parade. Stretto has furnished well since she last appeared in public, and is an attractive filly.
\V. Rennie lias been engaged a ride Scotch .Nation in the Great Northern Hurdles and Billy Boy in tho Great Northern Steeplechase. It is probable that Scotch Nation will bo ridden in tho Steeplechase by R. E. Thompson, who is making a good recovery from tho injuries be received in a fall at Matamata a couple of weeks hack. Thomson was expected to leave hospital during tho week-end.
According to his owner, Mr K. Gillies, Contact is to take his place in the field for the Great. Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie. The Cockpit gelding looks all the better for the racing he had at Hawcra, where he won each day. Many consider that Contact has had hardly the necessary experience tr win such a race as the Great Northern. No doubt ho would be all the better for somo more experience, but if the going is not too heavy Contact may. test the host opposed to Mm.
