)•" • GREAT ADVANCE IN treatment.

PARTIAL SOLUTION OF PROBLEM IN SIGHT.

(Press Association),

WELLINGTON, July 6

f ‘Not so very long ago cases of cancer were considered hopeless, even by the medical profession. But those days have passed,” said Dr. J. "S. Elliott, in liis presidential address at the annual meeting of the Wellington division of‘ the British Cancer Campaign Society.

Dr. Elliott, who is also president of the Dominion branch, said that very advanced' cases -still appear, in spite of all education, and they are still hopeless. But, omitting those, 50 per cent, of five-year cures are commonly obtained in cancer of the large intestine and in some series of cases in cancer of the breast. Dr. Elliott continued that the cancer campaign had' only begun in New Zealand in 1929’ and had created a [•evolution in the care, study and treatment of cancer patients, with steadily improving results. Nearly 5000 cancer patients in Now Zealand have been under the supervision of the society. He added: “Investigation goes on intensively throughout the world today, and not the least in the British Empire, and at least a partial solution of the problem, according to many authorities, cannot be much longer delayed. The pieces now are being fitted together as in the case of a huge jigsaw puzzle.”
