Tlio fortnightly meeting of Hie Gisborne' Borough Council was hold last evening. 1 11 the absence of the Mayo r (Mr. John Jackson) the Deputy-Mayor (Or. H. E. Maude) presided and also present were Crs. G. Bradley Smith, J. tV, 11. Holmes, 11. Holmes, J. Hall, D. S. Thompson, W. J. MacGibbon. M , Cave and U• H. De Costa. The Commander of H.M.S. LaburnJiain advised that it was proposed to visit Gisborne from .November 17 to 20, and inquired if those dates were J table. The Town Clerk’s action in [firming tile dates by letter was 'approved, and the matter of entertainment was referred to the finance committee. The Cook County Council wrote staling that no action was behm taken ou the suggestion that heavy traffic license fees obtained from the borough buses should be paid exclusively to tile Borough Council. The letter was received. The secretary of the Municipal Association advised that the next conference would be held a t Wellington in March of next year, and asked that all remits be forwarded not later than November 30. —The letter tvas laid on the table The T ia wa County Council intimated its willingness to attend a conference to discuss apportionment 0 t heavy traffic licence fees.—The letter was received and the matter of the date was left in the hands of the town clerk. The Mayor and Cr, H. Holmes were appointed the couiicirs delegates. The chairman of the Haiti School Committee wrote thanking the council for installing a street light adja,N%t° the entrance to the school grpdls. —The letter was received. ihe Gisborne Fire Board advised there was no objection to the council removing the old salt water plugs bom the streets. Th<> letter was received. The Poverty Bay Bowling Club applied for a private parking area on the Ormond road frontage to the club’s property.—On the motion of Cr. De C’osta the request was granted.

GENERAL REPORTS. r'C'BLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The report of the public works committee included the following paragraphs : “A list of contemplated works f°r the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, the principal being: Lifting; of tram rails. Gladstone road ; Planting shrubs; removal Etevwright Mciuor.nl, etc. The engineer asked for instructions in regard to fees to be charged for the feeding of dogs whilst impounded in the pound, and jour fimimittee recommend that the verges be 2s for the first day and %ence for each day thereafter. “The manager of the bus department submitted an offer from an advertising agent to take over the advertising on the council’s buses on 4 basis allowing the council 20 per cent, of the contract price obtained, finmanager stated the returns from advertising at the present time "cio very small. Your committee, therefore. recommend the acceptance °f this offer.

'The Public Trustee as administrator of the Do very estate asked the. council to bear half cost of repairs t° boundary fences on properties belonging to the Devcry estate, and adjoining tlie council’s section in Oak street. supervision. The whole of the work, is to be carried out to the satisfaction of the borough engineer.’’ The report was adopted. ENGINEER'S HCLOUT. The report of the engineer (Mr. E. It. Thomas) included reference to the following matters: — Reserves.—Work lias been carried out as usual at the various reserves and at Anzac Park and Aberdeen road vegetable gardens. '‘Maintenance—YVorks comprised Street cleaning; cleaning, stormwater drains and sumps; repairs to various streets; cartage ol spoil and sand; grading gravelled roaeffi; trimming various footpaths; repairs to bitumen road surfaces; minor repairs to Plant and bridges. ‘‘Roads. —Gravel has been placed on Dtout street and Childers I'oad. Gladstone road, south sale, between Roebuck load and Cobden street: Preparation of foundations for hot mix pavement has been completed. Minor repairs to Roebuck road bridge have been in hand.

“Buildings—Borough Cottages: Repair work, as authorised, is being carried out as labour is available. Waiting shed at Gladstone road-Lyt-ton road comer: ’The removal of half section of she c | to Chalmers roadChilders road intersection has been completed. "Concrete Kerb:tig.—The construction of kerb ana channel in Palmerston road, from Cobden street to Roebuck read, is in Progress. “Unemployment Relief Works-—• During the fortnight employment has been provided for ‘TOO men per week. The main works comprised : Vegetable gardens at Botanical Gardens and Anzae Park Reserves; leading lorries ; various jobs at borough yard ; levelliipr Waikanac Beach Society’s land ; clearing slips from access road and from excavation of Taumata- Hill reservoir.

“Macrae Rath.—-Tile bath was prepared for opening on October 23rd. Overhaul and alterations to pumping plant and replacement of lour T2tt. lengths of 12in. cast iron supply and delivery pipe with a 30ft. length of steel pipe to repair damage caused by scouring is in hand/’ The report was adopted. ’ WATERWORKS. Regarding the waterworks, the engineer stated that the gauge readings were: Highest 1201bs, lowest 95Ibs. Work bad been carried out as follows: Repairs to mains, hydrants, valves, services, tubes, etc. The main line was maintained in working order. There was one leak during the fortnight, viz., at Park Racecourse, the water supply being cut off for one hour .to effect repairs. - The quantity of water that passed through the Venturi meter for the weeks ending 9th and Kith October, 1933, was 5,460,000 and -1,810,G00 gallons respectively. The icport was adopted.
