NO. 4 DISTRICT SITTING 1 .

A start was made yesterday with the public sitting of No. 4 District Transport Licensing Authority to hear evidence ' ' for or . against the granting of .applications for passenger Bervide licenses An The district. The members of the Authority comprise AlessrsAf.-B. Logan (chairman) Chas. Matthews and. M. S. Chambers and Mr. J. A. Wilkinson, secretary. Unopposed application for licenses on the service's named were received frdio- the following :

H. W. G. Dickinson (represented by Mr. D. E. Chrisp), Gisborne-Tiniroto service.—The chairman commented that . applicant must observe h:s timetable, more strictly, as-'he was rather in the habit of "Ijchtijig '.the pistol.’/ The Authority considered also that' the'"f ares should he the same m winter as.'in> summer, because of the improvement in the'road, hut this was opposed by counsel for applicant, who contended that a deviation was still in use;on the route. —The license was -granted, but decision on the matter of fares was reserved. Mrs. J. McGaveston (Mr* Chrisp), Ngatapa-Gisborne via Patutahi. — This application included a request that the fares for children b* increased, counsel explaining that it was c.e-. sired to bring these fares up to half the adult rates and that friction occurred with another service owing to fare for part of the journey not being the same.—The chairman pointed out that there was difficulty, in reaching an equal standard , of. fare for all parts.—The license was granted, decision on the fares.question being re-

McGaveston (Mr. Chrisp), Waituhi-Gisborne via Patutahi.—-The. license was granted, on the same conditions as last year with two minor applications, , but the question . of fares was reserved. S G. Glennie and Son (Mr. G. Glen ziie) Bere-Gishorne.— Application was made for extension of this run by nine miles to WHarokopae, and it was suggested that-the faro, for the extra distance should be ss.—The chairman commented that the Authority considered the faros excessive. It was considered also that,an attempt should to made for better co-ordination with Mrs McGaveston’ s service—The license was'granted, subject to approval of the schedule of fares by the Anth°r CJ 7 * Wood ford (Mr. S. V. Boaufoy), Buatoria— Port Awanui—lt was explained that this matter had been set down for hearing, but no official application for a license had come to hand. The matter was formally adjourned, the chairman mentioning that a license would probably ho granted when the application was received. F. R. Parker (Mr. L. C. Parker), Gishornn-Tohunga.—Granted on the name terms .as last year. E. J. Cahill (Mr. ,T. S. Wauchop). ■Wha'tatutu-Gishornc via Ormond and Makaraka— Mr. L. T. Bnrpard, on behalf' of E G. Gre v (on the same route), pointed cut that alterations ’ made in the / timetable durintr the year and there was clashing as the result—Mr. Wauchop explained that his client’s service wn s largely governed by the carriage of mails, this having lod to the. nltera ; tions ' in the timetable during the year.—Mr. D, E. Chrisp (on behalf of Mrs. B. Wilcox) stated that Mr. Cahill was in the habit of picking up passengers .between To Karaka and Gisborne.' Traffic on that section belonged correctly to. Mrs, Wilcox and MrgGrey,.—The chairman stressed the serious nature of this offence , and pointed out that the penalty in the near, future, might he of utmost, sev, cr ;;: in this matter- was •deferred to-dhy, pending .consultation on.; The, V.-between counsel. Mr.- Cahill’s license, how evor, was granted, subject, to approval of Applicant’s parcels schedule ar, d other minor points.

Mrs. B. Wilcox 1 (Mr.'Chrisp), ds-borne-Bartlett’s. —Granted on the same terms as previously.

Gisborne Borough Council (Mr. IC. G. Ball), Gisborne-Te Hapara, Gis-horne-Kaiti and Wainui Beach, Gis horne-Mangapapa and Hospital.—All granted on same conditions as before.

W. .J. Gomm (Mr. Beaufoy), AVai-paoa-Gishorne via Waihirere.—The chairman warned applicant that he must adhere to the rou-es for which he was licensed. —The license was granted subject to arrangement regarding fares as between applicant and Mrs. Wilcox.

F. Shekleton (Mr. -Beaufoy), Manu-tuke-Paparatu.—Application for license.—Granted.
