SWIMMING

RUNNER, as SWIMMER

PRAISE FOR. J. E. LOVELOCK

“J. E. Lovelock, the Now Zealand tiraek athlete now resident at Oxford appears to have no limit to either !his ambition or his energies,” says Air AY. J. Hoiwcroft, a leading English swimming coach. “Two days after making a dead-heat for first place in the cross-country race against Cambridge in December, he came to London to learn the crawl /stroke, in Icoursfo ;of preparation for the Amateur Athletic Association’s Pentathlon next Alay. VAlthough J have no tabulated record,” added Air Elowcroft. “I suppose I have been teaching the crawl stroke to an. average number of 1000 pupils each season for more years than I care to state hut- Lovelock, in tepite of a physique developed by track work, is the most apt pupil that I have ever handled. In fact, he (learned the mechanics of the stroke and executed it in good stylo all within the first five, minutes of his lesson. Ot] course, it is a matter of conjecture 1 whether Lovelock would have been as famous in the water as he is on the cinder track, hub one thing is'“certain. ho would have been a remarkable swimmer had he taken to this sport in his boyhood days.
