A DOOMED MAN

The newspaperman who was shot by Nazis in Vienna was Dr. George 8011, an Englishman. who had lived in Germany for 15 years. The Arbeiter Zeitung, in an article on March) 19, described Dr. Bell, as liaison officer 1 between the Hitlerites and an international magnate who subscribed largely to the Nazi cause. It is said that Dr- Bell met the magnate in London last year, and big credits for the Nazis followed. The Daily Express, however, recalls that he reached Harwich and was not allowed to land. The authorities gave no reason. Dr. Bell returned to Berlin in. fipar. Nazi leaders in Munich later decided that Dr. Bell was untrustworthy. Ho recently revealed sensational details concerning Colonel Roehm, and these were hotly resented i n (Nazi circles. Thereafter Bell was a doomed man, and finally fled from Berlin to avoid arrest. His pursuers cut tho telegraph wires at Durchholzen before entering the village. They were heard urging Dr. Bell to return to Germany, saying that his mother and sister had been seized as hostages, and would then ho released. Dr. Bell replied that he would return only by train, and not by motor car.

VIENNA, April 5. The Nazis also severely wounded a (friend of Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell was the chief witness for the Munich Socialist newspaper which Air Brownhou'se sued for libel in 1932. Dr- Bell was acquitted of forging Russian currency notes m 1930. ”
