SYDNEY, Jan. 4. Mechanics and wireless experts are working day and night on the Southern Cross at Mascot Aerodrome, preparing the monoplane for the New Zealand flight. Special radio teleplony and Morse receiving and transmitting equipment arrived from Holland yesterday to he installed in a Jk sound-proof cabin. It will he tested #tO“day with amateur wireless stations 4* during a flight over the city. Trailing and fixed wing aerials will be used. In order to ensure silence for radio telephone conversations. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith has designed long exhausts from the two outboard motors which curve over the top of th'e wings. The centre engine’s exhaust trails under the cabin. An electric landing light of 60,000 candle power and driven by a special generator has been installed. , It will flood-light any aerodrome,. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith_explained: “AVe are taking it along in case we are delayed by headwinds until after dusk.” A total weight of 13,000 pounds will he lifted for the New Zealand trip. There will be five persons, and 660 gallons of gasoline, sufficient for 22 to 24 hours’ flying. The plane weighs 6300 pounds empty. The Evcniug Standard says that Mr. J. A. Mollison and his wife are planning jointly to fly the North Atlantic both ways in the spring. LONDON, Jan. 3J. A. Mollison states that the jc "'3, North Atlantic flight will follow his solo flight from Dakar to Rio do Janeiro and hack aboard the “Heart’s Content” later, in the year. A message from Forrest state., that the attempt to rescue Mr Whelan, marooned in Central Australia, could not be carried out to-day, owing to a defect in the petrol pipe of Pilot Raker’s re-conditioned aeroplane, but the attempt will be made at dawn to-moiTOw, when the fault- has been remedied. ,

Air Force machines flew over Mr Whelan to-day and dropped a message, informing him of the chanpe in plans. More food and water were also provided. Mr Whelan seemed in better health, than when last seen.
